🇺🇸 This is the elementary school that I attended for three days before moving to Germany.

🇰🇷 독일로 이사가기 전에 3일간 다녔던 초등학교.

🇺🇸 Seoul Arts Center. It’s across from the street from the elementary school.

🇰🇷 예술의 전당. 초등학교 건너편에 있음.

🇺🇸 The bus. I took a video too. But I can’t directly upload iPhone videos to Ghost and when I tried conversion to MP4, the quality was so poor. When is someone going to build a tool that has all the best aspects of all devices? (I’m not going to switch to Android just so I can upload videos directly to Ghost. The iPhone has too many work-related advantages.)

🇰🇷 버스. 비디오도 찍었는데. 아이폰 비디오를 고스트에 직접 올릴 순 없고, MP4로 컨버트 하려고 보니 화질이 너무 떨어지더라. 언제쯤이면 모든 기기의 최장점들을 모은 툴을 누군가가 만들까? (고스트에 비디오를 직접 올리려고 안드로이드를 쓰기 시작할 일은 없다. 아이폰은 작업 관련된 장점이 너무 많음.)

🇺🇸 On the KakaoMap app. Oddly, it shows me some pages in English and others (like the one in the pic above) in Korean + English. This makes me think that it reflects the system default language (which is English, on my phone), but when something isn’t available in that language, it shows that something in Korean.

Which is disappointing for users who don’t speak Korean. The app is excellent in Korean, but there are so many foreigners in Seoul now, it’s interesting that this app doesn’t have full English support.

Speaking of which, all Seoul subways I’ve been on have good English signs + English announcements within the trains. (There are also Chinese and Japanese announcements, sometimes.) On the other hand, with buses, it depends. Newer buses have better English support.

🇰🇷 카카오맵. 이상하게도, 어떤 페이지는 영어로 보여주고, 어떤 페이지는 (위의 사진과 같은 것은) 한국어 + 영어로 보여준다. 이 때문에, 앱이 시스템 디폴트 언어를 반영하되 (내 폰의 경우에는 영어), 뭔가가 그 언어로 제공되지 않을 경우에는 한국어 내용을 보여준다고 여기고 있다.

이는 한국어를 쓰지 않는 사용자에게는 실망스럽다. 한국어로는 이 앱이 너무 좋은데, 이제 서울에 외국인이 넘쳐나건만, 앱에서 완전한 영어 지원이 되지 않는다는 게 흥미롭다.

말이 나온 김에: 내가 탄 서울의 지하철은 전부 영어 표지판 + 전철 내의 영어 안내가 잘 되어 있었다. (가끔은 중국어와 일본어 안내도 있음.) 반면 버스는 케바케다. 새로운 버스에서 영어 지원이 더 잘 된다.

🇺🇸 And thusly I arrived at COEX. Specifically, Megabox, which is the movie theater. As shown in the picture, it was really empty at the time I arrived. Later on, it became more crowded.

Do try movie theater food. It is actually good—compared to the average movie food in the US—although overpriced.

🇰🇷 그리하여 코엑스에 도착. 더 구체적으로 말하자면, 메가박스 영화관. 사진에서 보이듯이, 내가 도착했을 때는 텅텅 비어있었는데, 나중에는 좀 더 붐볐다.

영화관 음식을 먹어보길 바람. 실제로 괜춘함. 미국의 평균적인 영화관 음식에 비하면야! 다만 가격은 비쌈.

🇺🇸 The movie Hyewon and I watched was <Exhuma>. I love the Korean occult genre. Plus, this movie was worth watching at the movie theater. The sound was great. Also Kim Ko-Eun is just goshdarn gorgeous and she and Lee Do-Hyun are friggin’ great singers? WTH? Do you have to sing this well to be a shaman in Korea? Also she dances well? Like, she dances shaman dances and you can tell she dances well? What? How? She is so beautiful.

🇰🇷 혜원이랑 내가 본 영화는 <파묘>였다. 나는 한국 오컬트 장르를 매우 좋아한다. 게다가 이 영화는 영화관에서 볼 가치가 있었다. 사운드가 엄청 좋았다. 그리고 김고은은 그냥 허벌나게 너무 아름답고, 김고은 + 이도현은 왜 때문에 그렇게 노래를 잘하는 거지? 대체 이게 뭔 일이래? 한국에서 무당 하려면 노래를 이리 잘해야 하나? 심지어 고은은 춤도 잘 추는? 무당 춤을 주는데 춤 잘 추는 게 티가 나는? 뭐지? 어떻게 때문에? 너무 아름다움.

🇺🇸 Pho! I do not know if K-style Pho is close to the authentic Vietnamese style. I did hear that within Vietnam, there are variations. Also I know from experience that there is a distinct American style to Pho & distinct Korean style to Pho.

I like both. When in Korea, I like eating Pho for that specific Korean style. In general, K-style feels more like a proper meal with thick meat and rich broth.

🇰🇷 포! 한국 스타일 포가 진짜 베트남 스타일에 가까운지는 모른다. 베트남 내에서도 차이가 있다는 말을 듣기는 했다. 또한 경험을 바탕으로, 미국 특유의 포 스타일이 있으며, 한국 특유의 포 스타일이 있다는 걸 안다.

둘 다 좋아한다. 한국에 있으면 그 특정한 한국 스타일 포를 먹기를 좋아한다. 대개, 한국 스타일이 좀 더 제대로 된 식사처럼 느껴진다. 고기가 두껍고 국물은 진하다.

🇺🇸 On the way home. In my entire life, I’ve only ever felt unsafe in the nighttime Seoul streets once or twice. The picture above was taken maybe… 11:30pm ish? But even when I’m walking around at 3am or 4am, I don’t feel unsafe.

Of course, it’s a good idea to always be alert, be it day or night; it only takes one crazy creep for shit to happen. Also, safety levels will vary depending on the neighborhood. Still, overall, Seoul is definitely not a city where you have to fear everyone or “need to be protected” or some such thing.

Maybe my feeling this way just means that I’m from America. Even compared to small cities in America that are supposed to be “full of families” (which, when the proliferation of “families” is used as a shortcut description for the safety level of a city, I always think it’s laughable; as if criminals don’t have families or families don’t consist of criminals), Seoul the megacity feels way safer.

🇰🇷 집에 가는 길. 내 평생을 서울의 거리를 밤에 돌아다니면서 안전하지 않다고 느낀 게 한 번인가 두 번밖에 되지 않는다. 위의 사진은 아마도… 밤 11시 반쯤에 찍은 것 같은데, 새벽 3시나 4시에 돌아다닐 때도 안전하지 않다고 느끼지 않는다.

물론, 낮이든 밤이든 항상 경계를 하는 편이 좋긴 하다. 개떡 같은 일이 일어다는 데에는 미친 녀석 하나면 충분하니까. 또한, 안전 수준은 동네에 따라 다르다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 대체적으로, 서울은 분명 모두를 두려워하거나 “보호를 받아야 한다”는 식의 느낌을 가질 필요가 없는 도시다.

어쩌면 내가 이렇게 느끼는 건 그저 내가 미국에서 왔다는 것을 말해주는지도 모른다. “가족들로 가득하다”는 미국의 소도시들에 비교해도 (가족이 많다는 게 한 도시의 안전 수준에 대한 지름길스러운 묘사로 이용될 때, 난 그게 항상 참 우습다—마치 범죄자는 가족이 없거나 가족에는 범죄자가 없다는 듯이), 메가시티인 서울이 훨씬 안전하게 느껴진다.
